As AI tools like ChatGPT and Replika become more widely used by young people, it’s increasingly important to open up safe, respectful conversations with both staff and students about the nature of chatbot relationships—what they are, why they might appeal, and where healthy boundaries need to be set.

🧠 What Are Chatbot Relationships?

Some students, particularly those navigating loneliness, anxiety, or social discomfort, may begin to engage regularly with AI-powered chatbots. These apps are often designed to mimic human friendship, empathy, or even romantic connection.

While some chatbot interactions are harmless or even helpful (e.g. practising conversation, journaling), others can lead to:

  • Emotional over-reliance

  • Detachment from real-world relationships

  • Reduced social skill development

  • Exposure to inappropriate or unmoderated content (in third-party apps)


👩‍🏫 Talking to Staff: What They Need to Know

Your boarding staff don’t need to be tech experts—but they do need to:

  • Recognise signs that a student may be overly invested in AI companionship (e.g. withdrawing from peers, quoting chatbot advice, isolating during social time)

  • Understand why students might turn to chatbots (e.g. safe space, always available, no judgment)

  • Avoid dismissiveness or ridicule, which could cause students to hide behaviour rather than discuss it

  • Know how to escalate appropriately if chatbot use appears to be replacing real human connection or contributing to anxiety, avoidance or distress

Staff training should include examples of safe vs. concerning use and how to reframe the conversation with empathy (e.g. “It’s okay to find comfort in tech sometimes, but let’s also talk about the real-life people here for you.”)

Many students will be curious, not addicted. Our goal isn’t to police their tech, but to build critical thinking and healthy emotional awareness.

Conversations should focus on:

  • What AI can and can’t do (“It can simulate care—but it can’t truly care for you.”)

  • Why real human connection is vital, especially during adolescence

  • How to spot the difference between useful digital journaling and emotional dependency

  • Where to get help if a student feels like their online world is easier than their offline one

Keep language respectful, open-ended, and non-judgmental. Many students may not realise how much they’re relying on chatbots until asked gentle questions like:

  • “What do you like about talking to it?”

  • “Do you ever feel like it stops you from talking to others?”

  • “Would you feel safe talking to a real person about that too?”

  • Talking to or quoting a chatbot frequently

  • Avoiding peer interactions or real conversations

  • Referring to an AI companion as a best friend or partner

  • Becoming distressed when access to the chatbot is limited

  • A decline in mental wellbeing coinciding with increased device time

  • Acknowledge the appeal: “It makes sense that you’d turn to something that always listens.”

  • Gently re-centre reality: “Remember, it’s programmed to agree with you—it can’t challenge you or truly support you like a real friend can.”
